First settled in 1860 by
the Rudd family, Colorado's Territorial Prison was established here in
1868. Cañon City profited from the gold discoveries in the Cripple
Creek Mining District. One local businessman made his fortune by providing
materials to rebuild Cripple Creek and Victor after their devastating fires.
The largest community along the Byway, Cañon City offers all services,
including several motels, restaurants and shops. You can explore local
history and tour the original Rudd cabin at the Municipal Museum, or go
behind bars at "Old Max" in the Territorial Prison Museum. Enjoy shopping
in the downtown National Historic District, and stop in at the Dinosaur
Depot for a glimpse of the area during the Jurassic Period. Cañon
City celebrates the Blossom Festival in May.
