Railroad
cars filled with gold ore traveled down Phantom Canyon to Florence from
1894 to 1912. With ample coal and water, Florence shared in the wealth
of Cripple Creek by becoming a center for processing Cripple Creek's gold.
By the turn of the century, nine reduction mills operated around the clock.
Visit the Pioneer Museum to see memorabilia from Florence's past and take
a stroll through historic downtown. Florence offers a variety of antique
shops housed in its historic brick buildings, as well as galleries, restaurants
and lodging. In 2002 the historic Rialto Theater opened after a 25-year
hiatus - it has been refurbished to its 1923 grandeur. Six parks offer
a variety of outdoor and interpretive opportunities.
A new
18-hole Gary Player Signature golf course - the first in Colorado - is
under construction. Each September, Florence celebrates its heritage during
Pioneer Days.

lies along the base of Battle and Squaw Mountains, the richest mining areas
in the District. The "City of Mines" offers many opportunities to experience
mining history. Located in the heart of Victor, the historic Gold Coin
Mine's rich ore was dug from under the city. The huge headframe from the
Cresson Mine, dating to the turn of the century, rises above the Gold Bowl,
Victor's baseball field. On the Independence Mine, a National Historic
Register site. This mine made the District's first multimillionaire, W.S.
Stratton. The downtown National Historic offers antique and gift shops,
Cajun restaurant, deli and bar, old-fashioned soda fountain and the beautifully
renovated historic Victor Hotel. The Victor Lowell Thomas Museum offers
exhibits on mining history and the town's most famous son. Visitors
will notice restoration of City Hall and several other historic buildings
in progress. Nearby are a series of historic trails that offer hiking,
mountain biking and horseback riding opportunities.
Each
