Safety & Preparation

Is cell phone service available along the byway?

Cell phone service is unreliable throughout much of the Gold Belt Byway, particularly in canyon areas and remote sections of Phantom Canyon Road and Shelf Road. The deep canyons, rugged terrain, and distance from population centers create natural barriers to cellular signals, making it difficult or impossible to call for assistance in many areas along the route. This limitation makes advance planning and preparation even more critical for safe byway travel.

Before departing, inform others of your travel plans including which roads you intend to take and your expected arrival time at destinations. Carry adequate supplies including extra water, food, first aid equipment, emergency tools, and weather-appropriate clothing since you cannot rely on summoning help via cell phone in remote areas. The five communities along the byway offer reliable cell service and should be used as checkpoints to update others on your progress. Consider carrying a satellite communication device or emergency beacon if traveling alone or during seasons when weather conditions could strand vehicles, as traditional cell phone service cannot be depended upon for emergency communication along most of the 131-mile route.
