As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we work tirelessly to preserve the rural lifestyle, natural environment, and rich cultural heritage along this historic route. But we can't do it alone.
Your contribution directly supports conservation projects, educational programs, and the preservation of historic sites along the byway. From maintaining scenic vistas to creating educational signage, every dollar helps protect this unique piece of American history.

Racing to Cripple Creek
The Florence and Cripple Creek Railroad won the race to bring rail service to the mining district when its first passenger train climbed through Phantom Canyon to Victor on May 27, 1894. The F&CC was a narrow gauge railroad with just three feet between the rails, making construction through the rugged terrain faster. For 18 months, the railroad enjoyed a virtual monopoly on transportation in the district.
Twelve Railroad Stations
Twelve stations were established along the Florence and Cripple Creek Railroad grade to service trains hauling coal and supplies upgrade and gold ore downgrade. Ghost towns and interpretive signs along Phantom Canyon Road now mark where these bustling stations once stood.
