Saw Blades Still in the Stump
In the 1890s, entrepreneurs attempted to saw the famous "Big Stump" at Florissant into pieces to ship to the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. The petrified redwood proved too hard for their saws, and broken saw blades from the failed attempt remain embedded in the stump to this day.
500 Volunteers Repair Phantom Canyon
After severe floods damaged Phantom Canyon Road in 1921, the Florence Chamber of Commerce recruited about 500 local volunteers to repair the highway. An iconic photo at Liberty Rock shows dozens of workers surrounding a sign reading "Florence Phantom Canyon Put 'Er Thru."
