First Fossil Butterfly in America
Charlotte Hill discovered the first fossil butterfly ever found in America at Florissant in the 1870s. The specimen was later described by renowned paleontologist Samuel H. Scudder and helped establish Florissant's reputation as a world-class fossil site.
Cripple Creek's Name Origin
The town of Cripple Creek likely got its name from cattle injuring their legs while crossing the rocky stream. Early cowboys called such treacherous waterways "cripple creeks," and the name stuck when prospectors flooded the area during the gold rush.
