Paper Shale Preserves Ancient Life
The fossils at Florissant are preserved in "paper shale"—layers of volcanic ash and diatoms compressed to just 0.1 to 1.0 millimeters thick. These delicate layers captured insects, leaves, and seeds in such detail that scientists can study individual wing veins and leaf cells.
The Portland Mine's Boxing Champion
Before becoming the world heavyweight boxing champion, Jack Dempsey worked as a mucker in Victor's Portland Mine, shoveling ore for a living. The Portland was called the "Queen of the District" and extracted half of Battle Mountain's total gold production.
