Day One - Historic Downtown to Coal Country
8:00 am - 8:15 am Breakfast in Cañon City or Florence

Start your historical journey with breakfast at a local establishment

8:15 am - 10:00 am Historic Downtown Cañon City Walking Tour

Stroll through downtown before the traffic arrives and discover 81 buildings on the National Historic Landmark list within just a few blocks. The area features churches built from local stone quarried throughout the county, each telling its own architectural story.

Pro Tip: Early morning provides the best lighting for photography and peaceful exploration of the historic district

10:00 am - 11:30 am Royal Gorge Regional Museum & History Center

Explore the famous Dino Depot dinosaurs that migrated here in 2013, and discover the museum's extensive genealogy resources covering thousands of area families. The knowledgeable staff can assist with family history research.

1:00 pm - 2:00 pm Greenwood Pioneer Cemetery

Travel west on Royal Gorge Boulevard, turn left at Old Max (1st Street), and ascend the hill to one of the region's first cemeteries.

Greenwood Pioneer Cemetery is a historic gem featuring:

  • Artistic Sculpture - Unique memorial art
  • Historic Epitaphs - Stories told in stone
  • GAR Section - Grand Army of the Republic (Union veterans)
  • CSA Section - Confederate States of America veterans

2:30 pm - 3:30 pm Coal Camp Heritage Tour

Travel southeast to Florence on Highway 115, turning off at Williamsburg/Rockvale/Coal Creek. These historic coal camps now sit quietly but hold some of Fremont County's most compelling industrial history.

Coal Mining Legacy

These communities were once bustling with miners who powered Colorado's industrial revolution. Explore the remnants and learn about the diverse immigrant populations who built these camps.

3:30 pm - 4:00 pm Pioneer Museum in Florence

Before exploring Florence's wonderful antique alley (Main Street), visit the museum to discover the history of "King Coal" and the oil fields that once covered this landscape.

4:00 pm - 5:00 pm Phantom Canyon & Indian Springs

Take a round trip from Florence to Highway 50, then turn onto Phantom Canyon Road to Indian Springs Campground. Learn about their fossil beds and the rich history of Phantom Canyon's railroad heritage.

5:30 pm - 7:00 pm Dinner in Cañon City

Return to Cañon City for a leisurely dinner at one of the area's fine restaurants:
