Can I go camping along the byway?

Commercial campgrounds are located along the northern and southern portions of the byway, offering full amenities including hookups for RVs and trailers. These established campgrounds provide convenient access to byway attractions while offering modern facilities such as restrooms, showers, and often additional amenities like camp stores and recreational facilities. The commercial campgrounds serve as excellent base camps for exploring the byway over multiple days, allowing visitors to experience different roads and attractions without rushing.

If you want to rough it, camping is permitted on public lands although no facilities are provided in these dispersed camping areas. Dispersed camping offers the opportunity to experience the byway's natural environment more intimately, though campers must be completely self-sufficient and practice Leave No Trace principles. We recommend checking current regulations for public lands camping, being prepared for variable weather conditions especially at higher elevations, and ensuring you have adequate supplies including water, as services are limited between byway communities. Both camping options provide unique ways to extend your byway experience and observe wildlife during the optimal early morning and evening viewing hours.
