Bob Womack's $500 Mistake
Cowboy Bob Womack discovered gold at Poverty Gulch on October 20, 1890, igniting the Cripple Creek Gold Rush. Tragically, after a night of heavy drinking in Colorado Springs, Womack sold his El Paso claim for just $500—a site that would eventually produce over $350 million in gold.
High Park Road's Rolling Meadows
High Park Road traverses some of the most scenic high-altitude meadows along the Gold Belt Byway. The route passes through open parklands with stunning views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and offers excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, including elk, deer, and wild turkeys.
